Background: MABEC was originally organized by Art Humphrey (then at the University of Pennsylvania) and Bob Kelly (then at the Johns Hopkins University) in 1987 to create an opportunity for graduate students and faculty studying biotechnology and bioengineering in the mid-Atlantic region to get together and learn about each other's work.
In recent years, the focus has been on providing students an opportunity to present their work. By running such a self-organized, single-day mini-symposium, faculty can afford to bring their entire research groups including interested undergraduates.
